The Portuguese Osteopathic Practitioners Estimates and RAtes (OPERA): A cross-sectional survey

ObjectivesOsteopathy is regulated as an independent healthcare profession in Portugal. The Osteopathic Practitioners Estimates and RAtes (OPERA) project was developed a survey to profile the osteopathic profession. This study aimed describe characteristics of Portuguese practitioners.MethodsA voluntary online-based distributed across Portugal between February June 2020. survey, composed 52 questions seven sections, formally translated from English adapted original version. Two pilot tests evaluated cultural adaptation reproducibility. Adult, self-defined osteopaths working were eligible. Recruitment participants performed through social media e-based campaign.ResultsA total 222 participated study, 143 male (64%), aging 30 39 years (42%), mainly Lisbon (30%). Most respondents had preliminary training (68%), massage therapists. majority self-employed (83%), owner clinic (55%) alone (59%). median number consultations per week 21–25 scheduled 46–60 min for each consultation. patients seek care lumbar (52%), cervical (38%) upper spine complaints. Although most experience strong identity, they do not advertise themselves exclusively osteopaths.ConclusionsThis represents first nationwide document determine osteopaths' results provide basis future surveys that will include cohorts with higher levels education, well findings other European countries.
